Technology takes over

by Kyle Seidman, contributing reporter

As time goes on, the usage of machines increases, and in the coming years, they may completely replace some jobs. Jobs that are at risks of being replaced are Uber and truck drivers, factory workers, and fast food workers.

With Uber testing out its self driving technology and the protests for raising the minimum wage, it shows that anyone could lose their jobs any day now. In an article from Uber, Anthony Levandowski, founder of Uber stated, “Today, we’re excited to announce that the world’s first Self-Driving Ubers are now on the road in the Steel City.”

According to Levandowski, Uber decided to let their “most prestigious” Pittsburgh customers try out their new technology first. They will give the first users a test driver to make sure that the customer gets a smooth ride. Even though the cars have been tested plenty of times with real-world events, weather is an unpredictable factor. Uber stated that because their self-driving cars are driving 24 hours a day, it will cause more people to get employed to watch the self-driving car.

Uber believes that  “…creating a viable alternative to individual car ownership is important to the future of cities,” because it could save thousands of lives from the large number of car crashes that kill 1.3 million people annually. Uber also believes it could prevent 20% of the space in the city from being taken up by parked cars, which causes trillions of hours to be wasted.

This has brought up the conversation about jobs being replaced and only time can tell what the future holds. This is also a good thing because it creates new jobs for people that might not have the education and skills.
